WISH holds annual summer camps, free of charge, to girls in middle school. Our sessions focus on exposing these girls to a variety of different fields and career opportunities, from engineering and medicine to journalism and technology. Our summer career immersion programs include guest speakers, hands-on activities such as labs and presentations, and games and fun activities to keep the girls engaged and learning!
Our summer camps aim to build confidence, leadership, creativity, and problem-solving skills in an open, welcoming environment that encourages a community of support and sisterhood.
Last year, we had the pleasure of having Dr. Crystal Young, Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of St. Thomas, speak to our girls about biochemistry and innovation in science, and share her own experiences as a woman in the field of science.
We were also honored to have Dr. Stephanie Thomas from the Houston Climate Movement speak about activism and leadership, and her own journey through the realms of advocacy and creativity!
Our girls learned the basics of coding, conducted a science experiment, took part in a challenge to build the best ramp for a toy car to travel the farthest, competed in an engineering tower building challenge, presented their entrepreneurship ideas for creating a company, wrote their first news articles, and explored many other fields through fun activities both in teams and individually.
